Introducing the British-built and "bomb-proof" Suffolk-40 Pasture Topper Mower. The unrivalled choice for tackling overgrown grass, brambles, saplings and light scrub. You'll most frequently see Suffolk toppers used to maintain paddocks and grazing land for horses, sheep, goats or alpacas.
The unique design of the Suffolk range overcomes the shortfalls found in conventional topper mowers - saving you significant time and effort while achieving superior results.
The average topper mower runs on two skids, and with skids, you have to sacrifice one of two things: - either you expend unnecessary time and effort to raise and lower the topper mower when turning at every row-end and when reversing, or you sacrifice the aesthetics and health of your grassland, as skids gouge and tear the ground and grass upon turning.
The Suffolk paddock topper lets you have the best of both worlds by utilising the solid, puncture-proof rear wheel to raise the topper mower off the ground and eliminate the need for skids. The cutting height is easily adjusted via the rear wheel, and no spanners or tools are required.
The rear wheel doesn't just eliminate skid damage to grass and the laborious hassle of raising the hitch every time you need to turn or reverse, but it reduces wear on your tractor. As the topper runs on the easy-to-pull rear wheel, the tractor is under much less strain compared to pulling a conventional topper mower like a sledge.
You will also have much more stability when turning, as raising a conventional topper reduces the weight on your front wheels, reducing turning ability. This is why you can use a wider Suffolk topper mower for your tractor's size, compared to alternative toppers - saving you even more time when cutting!
The second issue with the average topper mower is the problem of cut grass collecting along one side of the mower body and being deposited in dense lines. These lines of cut grass are unsightly, and on top of that, it's often recommended that grazing animals avoid eating this clumped grass, as it will sit in a long line and rot.
The Suffolk pasture toppers solve this problem too - instead of the rear of the mower being entirely open, the unique angled rear spreads this grass out across a much wider area. This leaves a beautifully neat and aesthetic finish, as well as peace of mind that your grazing animals aren't eating what they shouldn't!
The last main inconvenience with a conventional topper mower is cutting close to fences, hedges or under trees. As a topper mower typically sits directly behind the tractor, it can be hard to cut close to the edge of obstacles, forcing you to either let the edges remain overgrown and unsightly, or use up precious time tackling this manually.
The Suffolk topper design allows freedom to switch between the standard central mounting position, and an offset mounting position. The generous offset distance lets the topper protrude from one side of the tractor, so that you can cut close to edges without having to worry about your tractor clipping a fence, and keeping you further away from being whipped by tree branches - an essential for those with open cabs!
The Suffolk 40 hitch is fixed as standard, with the offset feature available as an optional extra. This is to keep the weight of the topper as low as possible for smaller tractors.
Lastly, the chain that runs between the top link and the mower chassis is a design called a 'floating linkage,' this allows the mower to glide over contours in the ground for an even cut across undulating terrain, while maintaining the ability to be raised off the ground when required.
Suffolk's British engineers have designed the Suffolk topper mower to be as robust, easy to repair, and as maintenance-free as possible. The direct-drive gearbox is protected by a sheer-bolt PTO shaft (which is included free of charge), to eliminate the need for easily-worn belts that rack up wasted downtime and cost on inferior toppers. There are no specialist tools or equipment needed to maintain these toppers.
There's no need to worry about parts being unavailable or discontinued in future (like with many cheap Chinese imports), as Suffolk toppers are built entirely in Britain and have been since 1999. The engineers who build this topper have been manufacturing agricultural machinery for over 50 years and are happy to provide spare parts for all machines manufactured during this time.
Delivery of these mowers is quick and easy. Due to the large, unwieldy size of topper mowers, anything larger than a 1.1m cutting width typically requires a forklift truck to remove from the delivery vehicle. Suffolk toppers arrive on the manufacturer's specialist vehicles, which are equipped with small cranes to offload for you. In addition, the vehicles are typically 3.5T flatbed vans that can access difficult-to-reach farms that an articulated lorry cannot.
Since 1999, over 500 Suffolk toppers have been sold entirely through word-of-mouth recommendation. Once you switch to Suffolk, you'll never want to return to a conventional topper - and with the expert craftsmanship, heavy build quality and long life span, you won't have to!

The topper was a good price and a good quality. Given the range of toppers, I needed advice from Zaros before I purchased mine. They were incredibly helpful and informative. The delivery drivers were fantastic and extremely careful when unloading the macxhine
The delivery driver was very helpful with a motorised forklift to bring the topper onto the premises. I have used the topper on a number of occasions attached to a little grey Fergie. I also have another old 4ft6in Slewtic topper to compare it with. The Suffolk topper seems well constructed and it cuts well. I have the offset version which, when used, helps with cutting close to fences and such. The main real problem is that the height adjustment is achieved by the wheel on the back. While this is a very good idea to reduce drag and skid marks the wheel only lifts the back end of the topper and the front stays at the same height meaning that the cutting blades are only lifted slightly and the front of the topper is tilted down towards the ground. Fortunately for me the cutting height provided is OK. The old Slewtic with the skids are much more of an effort to adjust than the Suffolk's wheel requiring bolts to be undone and repositioned but the skids ride level. Ideally some method of raising the front on the Suffolk would be required to keep the topper level. The three point hitch on the Fergie does not have position control and can only be manually wound up to raise it on one side. To correct the cutting height on the front another wheel could be added but would add to the cost and would make the topper less competitively priced. So maybe as an alternative that might work you could possibly add some extra holes in the front A frame where it attaches to give height adjustment. It would need to be tried out. The other small niggle with all the toppers, not just yours, is the lack of drain holes in the top of the deck. Unfortunately I do not have sufficient indoor storage and the tractor and topper have to sit outside. I keep it covered most of the time however if rain should get under it pools in the top. With the Slewtic I added some drain holes which helped significantly but I am reluctant to do this to a new topper. I hope this feedback is of some use. I will continue to use it hopefully for many years.
Thank you for your detailed and thoughtful feedback — it’s genuinely appreciated. Regarding the lack of position control on your Ferguson tractor, there is a straightforward solution that should help. We recommend using a top link chain kit. Once set to your preferred height, this will maintain the front of the topper at a consistent level during use. Unlike a rigid stay bar, a chain kit offers the advantage of allowing the topper to be lifted and lowered with the linkage, while still restricting the minimum cutting height. It’s a practical and cost-effective workaround that should help keep your topper level and improve your mowing results without the need for modifications or added front wheels. A bonus is that a chain kit can be used on other types of attachment too!
The topper has been excellent, it made a great job of cutting a 2.5 acre paddock for a neighbour, that was overgrown and about 3 to 4 feet tall. The Suffolk-40 has been a good match for our 1953 Ferguson TED20. Build quality is excellent and I was pleased to be able to buy a British made topper. I think the rear castor wheel is really good, reducing the amount of time the topper dragged on the ground and allowing the tractor to turn easily without needing to lift the topper a really useful feature as the TED20 does not have position control.
Great quality, excellent cut, grass spread out evenly
