When buying a trailer, the first step is to learn the benefits and limitations of each type of towing vehicle so that you can choose a trailer that’s both compatible and optimised for your vehicle.
Trailer compatibility for a ride-on mower is straightforward and often comes down to finding a trailer with a suitable hitch. If your lawn tractor has a simple plate with a hole, then most small trailers with a clevis hitch (also called a pin hitch) will suit you.
As ride-on mowers travel relatively slowly, pneumatic wheels with simple roller bearings will suffice for most uses.
The main cargo for trailers towed by a ride-on mower is garden waste. There are specialist garden dump trailers with mesh extension sides that are very popular, or versatile flat-bedded tipping trailers, again with mesh extension sides. A good quality trailer will start at roughly 500kg capacity and go up to 1000kg or higher.
It’s often the case that you can fill a trailer to the top, and you’re still far below the total weight limit, as garden waste (especially autumn debris) can have a high volume-to-weight ratio. Many customers choose a garden trailer with a weight limit higher than what they plan to carry so that they can utilise the larger trailer volumes.
If you are unsure about what ride-on mower trailer to buy, the SCH GWTS10 Tipping Trailer or SCH GWTS15 Tipping Trailer is your best bet, as it’s one of the most cost-effective and popular garden trailers in Britain, and it’s versatile enough to do most jobs to a high standard.
There are several tipping options for ride-on mower trailers, the most popular being a manual tipping trailer due to the low cost of this option. These trailers utilise a pivot point, typically centrally above the trailer wheels. To tip these trailers, you release a catch, and gravity will help the trailer to tip, allowing you to empty hundreds of kg with minimal effort.
The other type is hydraulic tipping trailers. These are most cost-effective when used with a compact tractor with its integral hydraulic lines, but you can still utilise the immense power of a hydraulic ram with a ride-on mower. These mower-friendly hydraulic trailers use either an electric or manual hydraulic pump, allowing you to tip up to 1000kg with ease. If your waste pile has to be stacked up high, a hydraulic tipping trailer will enable you to tip at a higher angle, allowing for a taller heap when compared to a manual pivot tipping trailer.
There is one main advantage of an ATV trailer compared to a trailer designed for ride-on mowers or tractors: the speed at which they are towed. ATV trailers are built to travel at faster speeds and over rougher terrain than their ride-on mower counterpart. While an ATV can happily tow a trailer that has simple roller bearing wheels, when travelling at high speeds, you should choose a trailer with hubs and stubs on the wheels.
ATV trailers that feature larger wheels are more capable off-road at speed, and the larger wheel diameters means that the towbar position is naturally higher than a smaller-wheeled ride-on mower trailer. A raised towbar is beneficial as a Quad’s tow hitch is positioned several inches higher than a ride-on mower on average.
Most quad bike trailers have a 50mm Ball Hitch, the same as you’d find on a caravan or any road-legal trailer. The 50mm hitch means you can also tow these trailers around your smallholding or estate with your car or 4x4.
The last main difference between an ATV trailer and a ride-on mower trailer is the drawbar length. ATV trailers have an extended drawbar, which makes for easier reversing and reduces the chance of fouling the trailer against the quad.
The best example of the subtle differences between ride-on mower trailers and ATV trailers is the SCH QDT Trailer vs the SCH GDTTGALV Trailer. The trailer bodies are identical, but the wheel size and default hitch differ. While an ATV can happily tow both, the QDT is the clear choice, and will let you maximise your ATV’s capabilities.
Like ride-on mower trailers, ATV trailers have a choice of manual tipping, electric hydraulic and manual hydraulic tipping. When you pair an ATV trailer with a form of hydraulic tipping, you have a setup that can rival a tractor and trailer, while handling rougher terrain and higher speeds.
Owning a compact tractor gives you the most options at the most cost efficient price point. Almost any trailer is compatible, especially when A Frames are available, which attach to a 3-point linkage and allow you to tow a trailer using either a 50mm Ball Hitch, a Ring Hitch, or a Pin Hitch.
You’ll want to narrow your tipping options to either manual tipping or tractor-line hydraulics. Manual tipping trailers use a simple pivot point, however tractor-line hydraulics allow you to tip the trailer using the hydraulics from your tractor. This is the most cost-effective form of hydraulic tipping trailer, and the savings help recoup some of the cost spent on a tractor.

Our livestock trailers are designed to transport sheep, pigs, alpacas and more across your smallholdings and farms. They typically feature ramps, which are not only suitable for your 4-legged friends to walk up, but make them excellent general-purpose trailers. Load them up quickly with wheelbarrows, or use them to transport compact farm equipment such as mowers or quad bikes.
Our stock trailers for sale feature galvanised steelwork for long lifespans - an essential when exposed to the corrosive muck of farm animals. Many also feature aluminium panelling and flooring, this is due to both the corrosion-proof properties, but also to reduce the weight of the trailers compared to steel panelling, allowing you to tow more weight per trailer load.
As well as being compatible with compact tractors, the livestock trailer wheels are designed for the high speeds of an ATV or 4x4, and can be towed across your land and private roads with ease and efficiency.
Our Livestock trailers are built in the UK, and are designed specifically for the terrain of Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland, and the more remote areas of England.
If you’re transporting bins at a zoo, leisure centre, industrial estate, or are fortunate enough to have a long driveway, a dedicated wheelie bin trailer will save you time and effort.
Our wheelie bin trailers are built in the UK and can all be fully customised. If you have non-standard bin sizes, or wish to transport a larger quantity or mix-and-match of bins, get in touch and we can have a wheelie bin trailer built just for you!
The most cost-effective bin trailers utilise the bin’s wheels for transport, and help you tow them along with your car, a ride-on mower, quad bike or a small tractor. The larger trailers feature a ramp that allows you to place the bins onto the trailer bed for bulk transport. We can fit a winch to help you get the bins onto the trailers, especially if you’re after a commercial bin trailer.
We can manufacture any size of bin trailer. Tell us the measurements of your bins and the quantity you wish to transport at once, and we can create a bespoke quote for you.
The massive benefit of a specialised hay bale trailer is that the trailer will assist with picking up the bale. You no longer need a tractor to load a bale up for you, the trailer can do all the work!
Our hay bale trailers for sale have a tipping semicircular body lowered onto the ground, the hay bale is then strapped securely to the semicircular steel frame. No heavy lifting is required to lift the bale onto the trailer, utilise the electric or manually operated winches to raise the bale effortlessly.
Our round hay bale trailers are manufactured in the UK.
Our horse muck trailers are built for the stables and fields where a wheelbarrow isn’t big enough! With high capacity rot-proof bodies, our muck trailers resist the corrosive nature of horse droppings.
The first is similar to a wheelbarrow in style, but with a greater capacity and towed by your ride-on mower, a quad bike, compact tractor or your 4x4. You can reverse these into your stable, or park just outside, and fill one extra large towed barrow, instead of making many trips to the muck heap with your small wheelbarrow. You can also tow the muck trailers around the field and collect the muck as you go. Eliminate the miles of walking from heap to heap!
The second type of horse muck trailer is for those with a muck heap far from the stables. Muck out the stables using your wheelbarrow, run the wheelbarrow up a ramp at the end of the trailer, then empty the wheelbarrow into the trailer. Once the trailer is filled, you can tow it to the muck heap and empty it in one go.
Our horse muck trailers for sale are a massive benefit in the winter months, when trudging through mud with a wheelbarrow can quickly become exhausting.
